Read about a Dutch-Belgium artist comparing Smeerenburg today with 17th century paintings.

Transcription from interview with Sara [12-10-2016], unedited:
“For me Smeerenburg is a very special place. Especially one spot between two triangles, where we were during the landing, I have seen the island of Smeerenburg in many different conditions. I always come back to exactly this spot to see the exact same place in a very different seasons, days, or weather conditions. Maybe it is the spot where I have been the most in Spitsbergen. I know many of the paintings where Smeerenburg is depicted, and I always try to see them when I am here. Today the yellow of the tundra is very strong.”
