In Spitsbergen one does not go into the wilderness, one leaves civilization.

Transcription from interview with Kristin [14-10-2016], unedited:
“You can hear and read about the wilderness of Spitsbergend through different books and stories of expeditions. It is one of the wildest places in Europe – with very few people and buildings. People are dwarfed by the wilderness. You can go out for a long hike, travelling many many miles, but you will have to turn around before you get to the other side of the wilderness. If you look north, there are no people, roads or settlements on the other side of the mountain. There is nothing.”
